WILLIAM B. LEWIS, M.D., is the President of SELAM Foundation. He is a member of the Summit ENT Medical Associates partnership in Oakland California and is a Board Certified Specialist in the field of Otolaryngology, Head, and Neck surgery. Dr. Lewis attended Morehouse College in Atlanta and completed his medical degree at the State University of New York at Syracuse. After an internship in Long Island, NY, and a year-long research fellowship at New York University, Dr. Lewis began his residency in ENT at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry where he developed an interest in the array of ear disease issues and microsurgical methods in use to address them This led him to pursue further training in otology and neurotology) at the Florida Ear and Sinus center.

Humanitarian medicine and relief work have always been of great interest to Dr. Lewis. In May of 2000, he was awarded the American Academy of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck surgery's humanitarian fellowship award. With their support, as well as that of the Ear Research Foundation and the PRASAD Project, he spent a year in India where he helped develop clinical services in Ear, Nose, and Throat for a population of over 200,000 people..

PETER B. MEADOW, J.D., is Secreatry of SELAM Foundation. Peter has had an extensive career as a public interest attorney, community organizer and non-profit manager. He has practiced law since 1983 and is a member of the bar in New York, New Jersey and California. He maintains a private practice in Berkeley California specializing in counseling and mediation for small non-profits and businesses and individuals.

For many years Peter served as general counsel to SYDA Foundation, an international non-profit based in New York. He has also worked extensively with The PRASAD Project charity and its sister organizations, PRASAD Chikitsa, based in the state of Maharashtra India, and PRASAD Children’s Dental Health Program, based in Sullivan County, New York.

Peter obtained his undergraduate degree in business and economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and attended law school at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. He currently also serves as Secretary to the Board of Directors of The Volunteer Center of the East Bay.

CRYSTAL TERRY, M.D., is Treasurer of SELAM Foundation. She is an anesthesiologist and medical acupuncturistwho has practiced in the San Francisco Bay Area for 18 years. In 2005, San Francisco Magazine’s “Best Of” series named Dr. Terry as one of the best anesthesiologists in the East Bay. Throughout her career, Dr. Terry has participated in mentoring, teaching and community service on many levels. She has been a clinical instructor in anesthesia at UCSF as well as a mentor for minority pre-med students at California State University, Hayward. She has participated in the Marcus Foster Youth Mentoring program and been a guest speaker in various Oakland public school classrooms. A former dancer, Dr. Terry is a founding board member of the Savage Jazz Dance Company, an Oakland based, multicultural arts organization now in its 14th year.


SEBLE FISSEHA, M.D., was born in Ethiopia and came to the United States at the age of 10. Dr. Fisseha received her undergraduate and medical degrees from UCLA. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland where she served as head pediatrician overseeing inpatient health in the pediatric rehabilitation unit. As a medical student Dr. Fisseha had a major focus on international medicine and was able to gain experience in Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico and Tanzania. She also was co-founder Students for Tropical Medicine and International Health (STMIH), a student organization dedicated to international medicine. TOMÁS A. MAGAÑA M.D., M.A., is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the groundbreaking FACES For the Future educational program based at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland. He also serves as educational advisor to the Biology Scholar’s Program based at University of California – Berkeley. Dr. Magaña is a member of the pediatric medical staff at Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland, and medical director of St. Rose Hospital's Silva Pediatric Clinic in Hayward, CA., which serves predominantly underinsured, uninsured and immigrant patients.

Dr. Magaña received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and his Master's degree in Endocrinology from the University of California, Berkeley. He earned his Medical Degree form the University of California, San Francisco. Subsequently he completed his pediatric internship and residency at Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland where he received the Kerry-Spooner Dean Memorial Award for community service.

He currently serves on a number of advisory boards which focus on pediatric health issues and youth leadership. He also serves on the International Board and Medical Team for Amigos de las Americas, a program which promotes youth and community development in the U.S. and Latin America. Much of Dr. Magaña's work focuses on health issues affecting multicultural communities both domestically and internationally.

MEREDITH MINKLER, Dr.P.H., is a Professor of Health and Social Behavior and Director of the DrPH Leadership Program at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. She has close to 30 years experience in developing and implementing community partnerships, community organizing, community based participatory research, and work with diverse community groups including the low income elderly, senior leaders, people with disabilities, youth, and women of color. Dr Minkler's current research includes a national study documenting the impacts of CBPR on health-promoting public policy, a state wide program building senior leadership in healthy aging and community building, and work with a CDC funded youth empowerment project in West Contra Costa, CA. Her publications include over 100 articles in peer reviewed journals and 7 books.

CHRISTINA (Kiko) MALIN, M.P.H., M.S.W., currently serves as the Director of Program Services for the March of Dimes California Chapter. She is responsible for the administration and oversight of all March of Dimes services and programs in the areas of public and professional education, grants and community services in the state of California. Prior to the March of Dimes, Kiko was the Executive Director of Grounds for Health, a Vermont-based international non-profit organization providing medical services to women in Mexico and Guatemala. Kiko has more than fifteen years of experience in maternal and child health education programs in both the domestic and international arena and has worked in settings ranging from county health departments, community clinics and hospitals to non-profit organizations and research institutions.

Kiko received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University. She also holds a dual Master’s Degree in Public Health and Social Work from the University of California, Berkeley, where she specialized in Community Health Education.

GARY BEAN, M.D., is an East Bay Area born and raised Board Certified General Pediatrician practicing in Oakland, California. Dr Bean graduated from Claremont Men’s College (Claremont McKenna College), matriculating to the UC, San Diego School of Medicine and the UCLA School of Public Health, simultaneously earning his Medical Degree and Master of Public Health Degree with emphasis in maternal and child health. Internship and residency training were served at UC San Diego and Children’s Hospital in San Francisco. A Master’s degree in Business Administration was earned at the California State University in Hayward.

Dr Bean is a member of the clinical faculty at both UCSF and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Oakland. Dr. Bean is also a federal mediator with the Northern California District Court. Dr. Bean has research interests in improving efficiencies in the interface between insurers and health care deliverers.
